Under St. Columba's Care Chaplet

History:
Created and submitted for use by Rev. Rwth Ashton
This was written by an anonymous monk who obviously experienced Columba as his spiritual abbot, mentor, and protector. This chaplet concludes with a prayer of similar spirit from The Iona Community.

Medals/Beads:
C  X  0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Method:
On the Cross:
As long as I lived under Columba's care, I was guarded by the angels of heaven. I could tread the path of fear because I had a leader who gave me courage.
Invitatory Bead:
It was not on a soft bed that he kept his mighty vigils. It was not for his own sins that is body was crucified on the blue waves. He turned away from his home, he crossed the rough seas where whales have their sanctuary, he cut through the waves that pressed against him, he attacked the mountains of the sea.
Cruciform Bead:
He fought bitter battles with the world, he armed himself with the wisdom of spiritual masters. When he hoisted his sails and crossed the sea, a kingdom was his reward.
Week Beads:
1st: Let us give thanks that the wild winds blew Columba to us. Columba-the light of his homeland-there was never before such a noble spirit within a mortal body.
2nd: Those who joined his priestly army are bold and brave, moving across the land as angelic warriors.
3rd: He is their ears when they are deaf, their strength when they are sick, their eyes when they are blind.
4th: I shall always sing of Columba, and ask him to pray for me.
5th: In every danger I shall call of him,
6th: With all my strength I shall praise him.
7th: May our dear Columba, spiritual conqueror of kings, and gracious father to the humblest peasant always protect us and move us with his power.
Exit Cross:
And now, may Columba kindly guide us to be an isle in the sea, to be a hill on the shore, to be a star in the night, to be a staff for the weak. Amen. (The Iona Community)

St. Columba's Journey Chaplet

History:
Created and submitted for use by Rev. Rwth Ashton
This prayer is attributed to Columba and was written in Old Irish of the 6th to 8th centuries. It was found in a 15th century manuscript with this description: "This is the protection of Colum Cille. And it is to be said at bed-time and on rising, and when going on a journey, and is of marvelous avail."

May the land in which I am be without sorrow. May the Trinity protect me wherever I stay, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Bright angels walk with me-dear presence-in every dealing. In every dealing, I pray them that no one's poison may reach me.
Week Beads:
1st: The nine-fold people of heaven of holy cloud,
2nd: The tenth force of the stout earth,
3rd: Favorable company, they come with me.
4th: May I arrive at every place,

6th: May the way in which I spend be a way without loss.
7th: May every path before me be smooth,
Cruciform Bead:
Man, woman, and child welcome me.

A truly good journey!

Well does the Lord show us a course, a path. (St. Columcille)

St. Columba Chaplet

History:
Created and submitted for use by Rev. Rwth Ashton
This prayer is based on a portion of Psalm 34, the one Columba was copying on the day of his death, 9 June 597. Adomnan, his hagiographer, shares the account that Columba stopped at the tenth verse. The cruciform bead prayer is from a hymn attributed to Columba (Altus prosator). The exit cross is Columba's final command and blessing to his community, spoken on the night of his death.

Method:
On the Cross:
The eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, and the ears of the Lord are open to their cry. (Ps. 34:15) Invitatory Bead:
Come, children, and listen to me; I will teach you to revere the Lord. (Ps. 34:11)
Cruciform Bead:
The Trinity be praised with the singing of hymns rung out with prayer; with thousands of lively angels dancing; with the four living creatures, full of eyes, along with the twenty-four happy elders, throwing down their crowns at the feet of the lamb of God; and all unite in the triple chorus: Holy, Holy, Holy! Let us fly at once to meet the Trinity-remaining in glory forever and ever. (St. Columcille)
Week Beads:
1st: At all times I will bless the Lord, whose praise shall ever be in my mouth. I will glory in the Lord; let the humble hear and rejoice.
2nd: Proclaim with me the greatness of the Lord; let us exalt God's name together. I sought the Lord, who answered me and delivered me out of all my terror.
3rd: Look upon the Lord and be radiant, and let not your faces be ashamed.
4th: I called in my affliction and the Lord heard me and saved me from all my troubles. The angel of the Lord encompasses those who revere God, and the Lord will deliver them.
5th: Taste and see that the Lord is good; happy are they who take refuge in the Lord!
6th: Revere the Lord, you holy ones, for those who revere the Lord lack nothing.
7th: The young lions lack and suffer hunger, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
(Ps. 34:1-10)
Exit Cross:
I give you, my children, these final words: Be at peace with one another, bound together by mutual and unfeigned love. If you do this, God, who gives strength to the righteous, will bless you: and I, abiding with God, shall intercede for you. Not only will God provide all things needed for this present life, but God shall prepare for you the blessings of eternity. (St. Columcille)

Chaplet of St. Columba

History:
Anglican.  Based on Lectionary Lessons.

Method:
On the Cross:
For no one can lay any foundation other than the one that has been laid; that foundation is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on the foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw—the work of each builder will become visible, for the Day will disclose it, because it will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test what sort of work each has done. If what has been built on the foundation survives, the builder will receive a reward. If the work is burned up, the builder will suffer loss; the builder will be saved, but only as through fire. Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy that person. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple. Do not deceive yourselves. If you think that you are wise in this age, you should become fools so that you may become wise. For the wisdom of this world is foolishness with God. For it is written, ‘He catches the wise in their craftiness,’ and again, ‘The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.’ So let no one boast about human leaders. For all things are yours, whether Paul or Apollos or Cephas or the world or life or death or the present or the future—all belong to you, and you belong to Christ, and Christ belongs to God. -- 1 Corinthians 3:11-23
Invitatory Bead:
O God, who by the preaching of your blessed servant Columba caused the light of the Gospel to shine in Scotland: Grant, we pray, that, having his life and labors in remembrance, we may show our thankfulness to you by following the example of his zeal and patience; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.
Cruciform Bead:
Rejoice in the LORD, O you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name! -- Psalm 97:12
Week Beads:
Psalm 97:1-2,7-11
1st: The LORD is king! Let the earth rejoice; let the many coastlands be glad!
2nd: Clouds and thick darkness are all around him; righteousness and justice are the foundation of his throne.
3rd: All worshipers of images are put to shame, those who make their boast in worthless idols; all gods bow down before him.
4th: Zion hears and is glad, and the towns of Judah rejoice, because of your judgments, O God.
5th: For you, O LORD, are most high over all the earth; you are exalted far above all gods.
6th: The LORD loves those who hate evil; he guards the lives of his faithful; he rescues them from the hand of the wicked.
7th: Light dawns for the righteous, and joy for the upright in heart.
Exit Cross:
The seventy returned with joy, saying, ‘Lord, in your name even the demons submit to us!’ He said to them, ‘I watched Satan fall from heaven like a flash of lightning. See, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions, and over all the power of the enemy; and nothing will hurt you. Nevertheless, do not rejoice at this, that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.’ -- Luke 10:17-20

Iona Chaplet

History:
Created by Rev. R. Ashton.
This Chaplet begins with a prophecy about Iona attributed to Columba. It concludes with another blessing attributed to Columba for those who experience Iona. The remainder of the chaplet comes from Psalms 139 and 97. I put together this chaplet for those who are going on pilgrimage to Iona or for those who would like to reconnect with a pilgrimage they have made there in the past.

Medals/Beads:
C X 0 0 0 0 0 0 0

Method:
On the Cross:
Iona of my heart, Iona of my love, instead of monks' voices shall be the lowing of cattle, but ere the world comes to an end, Iona shall be as it was. (St. Columcille)
Invitatory Bead:
Lord, you have searched me and known me. You know when I sit down and when I rise up; you discern my thoughts from afar. You trace my journeys and my resting-places and are acquainted with all my ways. (Ps. 139:1-3)
Cruciform Bead:
Where can I go from your Spirit? Or where can I flee from your presence? If I climb up to heaven, you are there; if I make the grave my bed, you are there. If I take the wings of the morning and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea, even there your hand will lead me, and your right hand hold me fast. (Ps. 139:7-10)
Week Beads:
1st: The Lord is Sovereign! Let the earth rejoice! Let the multitude of isles be glad.
2nd: Clouds and darkness are round about you, righteousness and justice are the foundations of your throne.
3rd: Your lightening flashes out across the world.  The earth sees and trembles.
4th: The heavens declare your righteousness, O Lord, and all the peoples see your glory.
5th: The Lord loves those who hate evil; the Lord guards the lives of the faithful and delivers them from the hand of the wicked.
6th: Light has sprung up for the righteous, and joyful gladness for those who are true-hearted.
7th: Rejoice in the Lord, you righteous, and give thanks to his holy name! (Ps. 97:1-2, 4, 6, 10-12)
Exit Cross:
Behold Iona! A blessing on every eye that sees her! Those who do good for others there, will find their own redoubled many-fold! (St. Columcille)
